When the octagon enters the room
While organic shapes still dominate many interiors, another direction has slowly appeared. It is less soft and more structured. The octagon. It is a classic shape, and because it refers quietly to the Art Deco period, it feels familiar without looking old-fashioned. With the right finish, it can feel elegant and slightly glamorous, but also calm and timeless.
Because the apartment already has an Art Deco base, the octagon felt natural rather than decorative. We first used this shape in a custom lampshade, inspired by a Stahl + Band pendant and placed on a Cosin floor lamp, which now acts as a statement piece in the living room.
In the bathroom and bedroom, the shape is applied with intention, but never everywhere. Just enough to connect the spaces. Mamoli taps bring sharper lines, while the bath, the rounded mirrors and the double bullnose marble edge soften the composition. A Sézane pendant and vintage wall lights strengthen the geometric line, but because they are combined with curved elements, the result feels balanced. Geometry works best when dosed.
In the bedroom, the wardrobe doors were already designed with octagonal panels, so when a octagonal shaped pendant was launched in the new SS26 collection of Maisons du monde, it confirmed the direction. Two archived Lee Broom pieces completed the room without taking too much attention.
The approach stays consistent: a dialogue between masculine and feminine, hard and soft, structure and movement. An organic rug, a cloud-inspired wall finish, rounded openings and a curved mirror soften the sharper lines. The organic trend is not rejected, but it becomes stronger when it is combined with a more defined shape.
The final addition is a lacquered dresser made from IKEA Metod base units. The structure was rebuilt and reshaped into an octagonal form, turning a simple kitchen module into a sculptural bedroom piece. It connects postmodern influence with practical design.
The room does not choose between curves and angles. It allows both, and that balance is what gives it personality.
