They were meant to carry everything else. The choice of wall tiles was therefore almost immediate. Cream-coloured ceramic tiles, simple, quiet, historically correct and, not unimportant , very affordable. These tiles that were widely used at the time, and for a reason. They are honest, neutral and surprisingly forgiving. What took time was not the decision, but the hunt. F inding the cheapest possible tile within the right genre became a matter of principle. Not to save money for the sake of it, but to avoid giving financial weight to an element that was meant to remain supportive. After extensive sourcing the internet, the final choice came from badkamertegels.nl, which felt like an unexpectedly satisfying discovery. Details, however, were a different story. While looking at photographs of old Art Deco bathrooms, one element kept returning: contrasting border tiles. Modest, graphic, quietly confident. I decided to bring that detail back in a very subtle way. Ironically, the border tiles ended up costing as much as all the wall tiles together. And yet, there was never any doubt. Burl wood started appearing across American design platforms. It was the signature wood of the period. A beautiful but dangerous material. Burl does not do modesty. It works best once, in one place, where it can carry a room on its own. The search for a burl wood vanity cabinet was difficult. The material had not yet filtered through to the mainstream, which also meant prices were still unrealistic. Eventually, the right piece appeared through a wholesaler who was already on the same wavelength. It became the most expensive item in the bathroom. Within twelve square metres, two doors and a window, that required some architectural gymnastics. The bath ultimately measures just 150 centimetres. A clawfoot tub felt too cliché and frankly too cheap unless cast iron, which was never an option. Eventually, about bath was found in an unexpected place. A bath that was subtly classic, modern in its restraint and surprisingly well priced. Instead of chasing an exact reference,the focus shifted to finding a tile that could deliver the same atmosphere. A 20×20 granito tile, almost anonymous on its own, became something else entirely once colour combinations and pattern were defined. It took more work than expected. Years of experience have taught me that form without function always reveals itself (usually within two years). This time, quality came first. And since quality comes at a price anyway, I allowed myself one indulgence: character. Many detours led to Mamoli, an Italian manufacturer with taste.Their hexagonal tap range was exactly what the space needed: a discreet nod to Art Deco without becoming decorative. A gamble, given the brand’s limited online presence.
